HARTFORD, WI (February 28, 2018) – The Hartford Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the scene of a 12-unit apartment building for a report of a cooking fire, smoke, and visible flames. This is a newly constructed complex (March 2017) with installed residential fire sprinklers. The occupant reported she was heating about 4-inches of cooking oil in steel pot on the cooktop, and she answered her phone. She went to her vehicle in the garage to gather information needed for the call. When she returned, less than 4-minutes later, she saw flames and called 9-1-1. While she was speaking to the dispatcher, one single sprinkler activated, before the hard-wired detectors in the unit had a chance to activate. The sprinkler put out the fire. When the first unit arrived, the fire was out, one sprinkler was activated, and the occupant and her dog were safely evacuated. The fire department was able to shut down the system. The sprinkler system did its job, and everyone went home safe!
